Profile

Huron University College is a residential, liberal arts, social science and theology institution, academically affiliated with The University of Western Ontario. In addition to Huron’s own programs, services and campus, Huron students have full access to the academic, community, cultural and athletic facilities of Western and graduate with The University of Western Ontario degrees.

Classes at Huron are small: at the first and second-year levels, 80 percent have fewer than 50 students; at the third and fourth-year levels, there are fewer than 25 students in all classes. The college has an excellent library, student services access centre, computer room and language lab, and career and employment counselling, backed by the further resources of The University of Western Ontario.

Huron’s mission is to promote educational excellence, to encourage scholarly achievement, to foster international understanding and cooperation, and to provide its students with a broad and useful education that will develop their intellectual skills, enhance their desire for knowledge, and prepare them for positions of leadership and responsibility. It is a mission which is perceived and practiced in a global context. These goals are fulfilled through the range of academic programs and opportunities students have for extracurricular involvement at Huron and Western, through community-based learning, local and international volunteer service/missions, internships and in various study abroad programs.

Huron also awards nine National Scholarships valued at $20,000 over four years to outstanding entering students who demonstrate a strong academic record in a wide variety of courses from the liberal arts and sciences as well as  outstanding achievement in volunteer/community service, athletics, the arts, and/or student life.

International (Visa) students with strong entrance averages will be considered for these awards valued at $1,500 to $3,000 per year.

University research

Research conducted at Huron reflects innovative thinking about issues critical to Canadians including, for example, globalization and its effects on indigenous communities; modeling participatory democratic practice; and the development of civil society institutions for poverty-reduction in Africa. Huron researchers examine the role of cities as engines of economic growth. Research in French and post-colonial English literatures explores the meaning of the “in-between” identity, an issue of importance in multi-ethnic Canada. Research into the development of hearing in infants contributes to our understanding of childhood development. The unified faculty structure (arts and social science) encourages faculty to engage in interdisciplinary research.

Students with interests in research are attracted to Huron because a fourth-year research thesis is either a requirement or an option in all our Honours BA programs. Huron’s community-based learning initiative links the classroom with communities outside the university and provides students with an exposure to social needs and new sources of knowledge.

Students in third and fourth years can obtain direct research experience as paid or volunteer research assistants to faculty members.

Our faculty members access support for research and its dissemination through our individual allowance program and through a competition for a pool of research funds.

International education

Huron offers a variety of opportunities to its students for learning beyond Canada’s borders. At present, Huron has 18 formal exchange agreements with universities around the world in Belgium, Belize, China, France, Japan, Korea, Malta, Mexico, Norway, Singapore, Sweden and the United Kingdom. In addition, Huron students are also eligible to participate in any of Western’s exchange programs.

Huron in Honduras: this experiential learning opportunity is designed for student seeking a deeper understanding of the social, cultural, economic and political links among societies in a rapidly globalizing world. Designed and led by Huron faculty, this program begins during the academic year and concludes with a three-week stay in Honduras in May. Students stay with families in the town of Copan Ruinas, study Spanish, take part in community development projects, work with young children in arts projects and teach English.

Study abroad: first-year study abroad opportunities are available with the International Study Centre at Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex, England. Other study abroad opportunities can be arranged by students to attend universities world-wide from a week to a year.

Volunteer opportunities: available through several student clubs such as GLOBE – a student club which networks with a number of committees actively involved in world issues; World University Service of Canada – activities include education and awareness of issues faced in developing countries, annual sponsorship of a refugee student; Amnesty International Committee, Huron Grands and Red Cross Committee.

Service learning: Huron offers a variety of community based learning courses, summer and business internships, and an international peer guide program.
