Profile

The University of Guelph is renowned for its commitment to being learner-centred and research-intensive, emphasizing multidisciplinarity and collaboration, fostering distance education, as well as its internationalism.

The university’s colleges and faculties include the College of Arts, the College of Biological Science, the College of Management and Economics, the College of Physical and Engineering Science, the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, the Ontario Agricultural College (and its three regional campuses at Kemptville, Ridgetown and Alfred), the Ontario Veterinary College and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. In 2002, the university joined forces with the Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning to create the University of Guelph-Humber in Toronto. Currently, more than 2,800 students are enrolled at Guelph-Humber.

More than 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled on campus in full- and part-time studies offered in more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The average entering grade of first-year students is 83 percent – the highest in Canada for a comprehensive university. In fact, nearly all first-year students entering from secondary schools in 2006 had an average of 75 percent or more. Guelph students achieve a graduation rate of 79.3 percent, and more than 96 percent of graduates are employed within two years of completing their degree.

Guelph’s high quality reflects world-class faculty who excel as teachers and researchers: 21 faculty have been named Fellows of the Royal Society; 13 have won 3M Teaching Fellowships.

With more than $128 million in external research funding, Guelph is one of Canada’s top research institutions. It is Canada’s innovative leader in plant and animal life sciences and a premier centre for agri-food, biotechnology and environmental research, education and outreach. A 12-hectare research park adjacent to the campus is home to 64 companies.

Guelph has about 600 international students and more than 90,000 alumni worldwide.

Student assistance

Undergraduate: The University of Guelph offers undergraduate students more than 6,600 scholarships and bursaries. Scholarships range from $100 to $30,000. In 2008-2009, Guelph awarded close to 2,500 entrance awards with a total value of $5.4 million and 4,100 in-course awards with a total value of $6.1 million.

Graduate: Every new domestic or international doctoral student is offered a guaranteed minimum stipend of $17,500 a year for three years. In addition, all incoming graduate students may be considered for various entrance scholarships. Numerous other opportunities are available in the form of merit scholarships, graduate teaching/research assistantships and bursaries.

International students: Guelph offers entrance scholarships to international students who have demonstrated academic excellence. A limited number of non-renewable international scholarships ranging in value from $500 to $6,000 are available to students who have not attended a postsecondary institution and are entering Guelph in September. Most of the university’s upper-year scholarships are available to international students.

University research

Guelph is committed to excellence in basic and applied research. Our basic research spans the sciences, humanities and social sciences and provides a rich scholarly environment for students. Faculty are engaged in research, talk to their students about research, and provide opportunities for undergraduate students to be engaged in research-intensive courses so they can develop the curiosity and skills to go on to graduate programs.

We also excel at applied research, particularly in agriculture and veterinary medicine. Guelph has a long tradition of doing research that helps farm producers remain competitive. The university has extensive facilities to support these efforts. Our new science complex has one of the country’s most sophisticated advanced analysis facilities, and our veterinary school has new facilities for stem cell research and clinical medicine. Through a network of controlled-environment facilities and research stations, we can assess plant growth under any laboratory or field conditions.

Research-intensive faculty, including Canada Research Chairs, state-of-the-art facilities and a supportive environment all contribute to making Guelph a great place to do research.

International education

Overseas programs include semesters abroad, exchange programs, field trips, service learning and letters of permission allowing students to study, work or volunteer in more than 26 countries. The university has partners in a variety of geographic regions, including Europe, Asia, Oceania, North and South America, the Caribbean and Latin America. Most students who participate in these programs describe them as a highlight of their academic career.
