Profile

Located in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University of Art + Design is an accredited, specialized, professional graduate and undergraduate university that supports learning and research in art, design and media. The four-year undergraduate degrees in visual arts (BFA) and design (BDes) merge critical theory with studio practice. The two-year Master of Applied Arts (MAA) program offers a professional degree that prepares students to engage in the expanding fields of design, media and visual arts within the cultural and creative economies.

What students bring to Emily Carr, experience, vision, energy, discipline and commitment, is balanced by what the university offers in quality, breadth, vision and choice. Students will find themselves working in studios, classrooms and advanced research facilities, and interning with community groups and local companies. Emily Carr offers some of the most sophisticated online courses in Canada.

Over the last 85 years, the University has had an enormous influence on the development and growth of the arts and design in Canada and internationally. University alumni and faculty are among the most influential and important artists, designers and media practitioners working in their respective fields. Students go on to careers in many different fields within the creative and cultural industries, as well as being accepted into graduate studies in all of the major universities and art institutions in the world.

Emily Carr encourages the development of new and innovative ways of thinking and creating within a university-based curriculum. At the same time, the university encourages students to prepare themselves for life after school. Emily Carr is a learning community devoted to excellence and innovation in visual arts, media arts and design. Curriculum is flexible, personal, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and based on the learning needs of students. Students have the opportunity to apply for co-op credits, internships and an exchange program. Emily Carr faculty are practicing artists, designers and scholars who encourage research and experimentation within every artistic medium and field. Facilities and resources support student learning and academic programs.

Applicants are automatically considered for these awards. Students continuing studies into second, third and fourth year can also apply for tuition scholarships which are awarded each year on the basis of GPA. Continuing students must apply for tuition scholarships. Approximately 90 scholarships are awarded each year with award levels varying from $1,000 to $5,000.

The university also offers bursaries to full-time students demonstrating financial need. Applications for bursaries are accepted early each spring semester.

Graduate: Emily Carr provides entrance scholarships to some graduate students. Application for these scholarships is not required; the university selects students based on their academic and artistic merits.

University research

Intersections Digital Studios (IDS) is Emily Carr's dedicated research space. It is composed of three themed studios: the Motion Capture and Visualization Studio, the Wearables and Interactive Products Studio and the Prototyping + Media + Programming Studio.

The studios provide faculty and graduate students access to state-of-the-art digital technologies to develop or enhance projects in all disciplines. These technologies were chosen to bridge digital and material practices and promote collaborations between departments. Examples include 3D scanners, a 3D printer, a CNC machine, a stereoscopic projection system and a 20 camera Vicon motion capture system.

Access to a facility such as IDS trains and educates a new kind of art and design researcher -- one whose understanding of technology is informed by a strong sense of aesthetics and ethics. In a field that moves so quickly, and where today’s innovations may be obsolete tomorrow, students and researchers will gain more than just technical skills. They will gain an understanding of the underlying structures that fuel the dynamism between technology and creativity.

IDS occupies a physical space of approximately 10,000 square feet of Emily Carr’s Granville Island campus, and offers opportunities for collaborations with industry and other educational institutions.

International education

The university provides an intimate learning environment with a diverse faculty and student body. The university fosters that diversity by welcoming students from around the globe.
