Profile
Established in 1921 with the original mandate to prepare young men for the teaching and preaching ministries in the Lutheran church, Concordia University College of Alberta has grown to become a degree-granting institution, offering 27 baccalaureate degree programs in arts, education, environment health, management, and science, as well as master’s degrees in information systems security management and biblical and Christian studies. Remaining loyal to its original mandate, Concordia continues to offer church work programs.
Our faculty are committed to excellence in teaching and research. With a student population of approximately 1,700, students enjoy smaller classes and greater access to their professors. Class sizes encourage participation and dialogue with peers and professors which ultimately leads to a more engaging and relevant education. Designed in the liberal arts tradition, our programs focus on developing students’ critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, and communication skills.
At Concordia, student life offers a rich and fulfilling experience. We are dedicated to developing a student intellectually, socially, physically and spiritually. Through the Concordia community, students have many opportunities to get involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities including student clubs and associations, music, drama and athletics.
The heart of Concordia is our commitment to the Christian faith; we believe that the Christian perspective brings depth to the campus experience. Students and faculty come from a diverse ethnic backgrounds and faith traditions which results in a richer learning experience as students benefit from a variety of viewpoints in class and on campus.
Concordia’s Highlands Campus, overlooking the beautiful river valley, offers the advantage of a close-knit university campus set in the heart of one of Canada’s largest and most vibrant cities – Edmonton. The city offers a high quality of life amid an abundance of arts, professional sports, and entertainment events as well as parks that form an extensive network for hiking, biking, jogging and cross-country skiing.

first year of university study in an arts, management,
or science degree program direct from high school. The program guarantees a scholarship for students with a
75 percent or higher admission average. Scholarships range
in value from $1,000 to $3,750 per academic year according to final admission averages and are renewable for a

University research
Concordia’s strategic research plan focuses on four themes that reflect the institution’s commitment to students and their roles in society: pedagogy and the scholarship of learning and teaching, ethics and social responsibility, natural and physical sciences, and Biblical and Christian studies. These themes reflect the work currently being conducted by our researchers in areas such as globalization and transnational relationships, human rights and gender issues, social responsibility and citizen action, environmental health, information systems security, pure and applied
mathematics, computing science, applied ecological research, molecular investigations into health and disease, applied chemistry research, Biblical studies, and religion
and the arts.
Concordia proposes to position Canada Research Chairs
in each of the four research areas, thereby adding to existing strengths and enriching the research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. Three of the research areas will be supported by research institutes currently under development: the Center of Learning and Teaching, the Center for Public Sector Research, and the Center for the Study of Religion and the Arts.
International education
International students represent over 20 different countries including Brazil, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Philippines, and Sweden. Concordia maintains partnerships with universities around the world to offer students the opportunity for an international learning experience. Academic and educational exchange agreements include Carl von Ossietzky Universität – Oldenburg (Germany), Jerusalem University College (Israel), and Universität Hamburg (Germany). Concordia is also a member of the Lutheran Educational Conference of North America, a consortium of more than 40 church-related colleges and universities.
