Profile

The University of Calgary is a dynamic research and teaching institution of growing national and international stature, with 17 faculties and more than 30 research institutes and centres. The U of C offers programs in a number of traditional and multidisciplinary fields leading to undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and professional degrees. The U of C maintains close ties to the Calgary community -- Canada’s energy capital and fastest growing city. The U of C has graduated 135,000 alumni over its 43-year history.

Every year, almost 29,000 students from across Canada and approximately 100 other countries are studying in more than 250 undergraduate, professional and graduate programs. The U of C gives undergraduate students more than $11.5 million in awards, making it one of the most generous scholarship programs in the country.

With external research funding totalling $244.9 million, the U of C is one of Canada’s leading research universities. The U of C houses several institutes, centres and groups investigating a wide variety of topics within the thematic areas of energy and the environment; public policy, human behaviour, institutions and cultures; technologies and information; and biomedical engineering, health and wellness.

With access to several professional schools, including the Haskayne School of Business, the Schulich School of Engineering, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, students keep their options open and discover their own personal passion.

The 213-hectare campus is designed for pedestrians, with extensive landscaping and green spaces. The main campus has more than 30 buildings -- most interconnected by enclosed walkways. The MacEwan Student Centre is a hub of activity at the university, with a food court, wellness centre and large concert hall. There is also a museum and art gallery, four performance theatres, two childcare centres and residences for single students and students with families. All student spaces have wireless Internet.

The U of C’s excellent athletic facilities include one of the world’s finest indoor speed skating ovals, a large fitness centre, hockey rinks, tennis and racquetball courts, sports fields and swimming pool.

The university is in the midst of an ambitious capital plan designed to create new and better spaces for teaching, learning and research. These major developments, including the Taylor Family Digital Library, a downtown campus, International House (opened fall 2009) and the new Energy, Environment and Experiential Learning building, are fulfilling distinct academic strategies and creating progressive learning environments.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: Students attending the University of Calgary are eligible for more than $11.5 million annually in scholarships, bursaries and awards ranging from $500 to $50,000. Awards for entering students include the University of Calgary Admission Scholarships, IB Diploma Scholarships, Chancellor’s Club Scholarships, Dean’s Merit Admission Awards, Schulich School of Engineering Community Service/Entrepreneurial Awards, Schulich School of Engineering Academic Excellence Entrance Scholarships, O’Brien Health Sciences Admission Awards and other high school awards. As well, the Government of Alberta provides more than $5 million each year in scholarship funding to undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Calgary.

Graduate: The U of C offers a number of scholarships, fellowships, bursaries and special awards, as well as graduate teaching assistantships and graduate research assistantships. Funding for thesis-based graduate students was $51 million in 2007-2008. The average amount per eligible student over that period was $17,715 per year. As well as national programs available to graduate students, the Government of Alberta provides additional support for graduate students at Alberta universities.

University research

The University of Calgary attracts more than $236 million per year in research funding, and is among the top research-intensive universities in Canada. The university offers several professional programs, including the Schulich School of Engineering, Haskayne School of Business, the faculties of law, education and medicine, and the only faculty of veterinary medicine in Alberta.

The quality of University of Calgary research is rewarded at some of the highest levels, from holding 73 Canada Research Chairs, to fellowships in Royal Societies in both Canada and the U.K. as well as a Gairdner Award. U of C students’ research potential is also recognized nationally, with doctoral students qualifying for prestigious and lucrative awards such as the new Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and the Trudeau Scholarships.

The U of C is pursuing the biggest single capital expansion in its history with projects worth more than $1.5 billion under construction or in planning. The university is adding capacity for more students and a host of new teaching and research activities. These major developments, including the Taylor Family Digital Library, International House, a downtown campus, and the new Energy, Environment and Experiential Learning building, are fulfilling distinct academic strategies and creating progressive learning environments.

As a publicly funded institution, the university is committed to engaging in research that is meaningful to the greater community. U of C’s three academic priorities of energy and environment, biomedical engineering and public policy will help improve the lives of Canadians. By building expertise in these three research priority areas, and in other areas in the future, U of C researchers are creating solutions to solve societal issues ranging from carbon capture to health care to sovereignty.

International education

The University of Calgary’s internationalization supports and enhances the institution’s academic and research priorities. Our numerous partnerships and agreements between institutions and agencies around the world provide opportunities for innovative, multidisciplinary scientific activities, particularly in the fields of biomedical engineering, and sustainable energy, environment and economy; for student and faculty mobility; and for collaborative degree programs. International educational opportunities exist for all students through group study programs, field schools, study abroad, development projects and programs, internships and practicums which add an experiential, cross-cultural component to their learning. A satellite U of C campus in Qatar has provided a unique opportunity to share global knowledge in the field of nursing, and a new residence on campus for international students and visiting scholars, International House, is a visible commitment to the continuing growth of international education at the U of C.
