Sherbrooke, Quebec J1M 1Z7
Telephone: 819-822-9600

Principal: Mr. Michael Goldbloom

Profile

Bishop’s University, founded in 1843, is a predominantly residential university whose primary goal is offering undergraduate students a quality education in arts, education, sciences and business administration.

A highly dedicated teaching faculty, an accomplished and diverse student body and an extraordinary setting combine to make Bishop’s University one of Canada’s premier undergraduate universities.

Bishop’s is located at the junction of the St. Francis and Massawippi rivers in the borough of Lennoxville in Sherbrooke, amid the rolling hills of the Eastern Townships of southern Quebec. Its academic programs are broadly-based and stress the inter-relationships of disciplines rather than their specializations. The residential aspect and small size of the university encourage an informal atmosphere in academic and social situations.

Emphasis is placed on personal contact between faculty and students through small classes and frequent use of seminars, laboratories and tutorials. Self-directed study is encouraged through student research projects and special independent study programs.

Student assistance
Undergraduate: Bishop’s University invests close to $1 million each year in its students. Renewable scholarships are guaranteed for all Canadian and CEGEP students who meet our liberal scholarship criteria. The value ranges from $1,000 - $3,000 per annum and all are renewable if students maintain a first-class standing.

Graduate: Awards are also offered to upper-year students (second/third year) with first-class standing who are not already on scholarship.

University research

In the last few years, Bishop’s has enhanced its research profile and put in place a new and dynamic research environment. In all departments, professors are involved in research activities, ranging from complex chemical experiments to political and literature studies to the creation of new works of art and music. Partnerships and collaboration were established with many universities and state-of-the-art research laboratories were set up for research in astrophysics, computer science, and chemistry. These accomplishments have increased the capacity of our faculty members to develop their innovative research programs and make a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge.

Moreover, many undergraduate students now have the chance to work with leading-edge researchers, thus complementing what they have learned in class and providing them with added skills to enter the labour market. The students are introduced to the research methodology with activities such as literature review, data collection and analysis, lab experiments, and article writing and paper presentations.

International education

Bishop’s University has agreements with more than 750 universities in 32 countries worldwide. We have more than 25 bilateral agreements, and are a member of two consortiums: National Student Exchange, an association of 174 colleges and universities that have joined together to provide reciprocal exchange opportunities for students, and the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities, which is a private organization comprising, on a voluntary basis, of all Quebec universities. WISE (Wider Interdisciplinary Systems in Education) is an exchange programme for Bishop’s students in education, which includes a teaching practicum in a school in either France or Spain. A particular focus of this exchange is interdisciplinary education, with an additional emphasis on experience in a second or third language. Partner universities with Bishop’s of this program, funded since 2004 by Human Resources and Development Canada, are Université de Sherbrooke, University of British Columbia, University of Lancaster (England), Université de Reims (France) and Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Spain).
