Algoma University is a thriving, primarily undergraduate university located in the scenic, lively city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, at the heart of the Great Lakes along the Canada-U.S. border.
Algoma University offers 40 undergraduate degree program options and emphasizes a balance of teaching and research priorities to optimize interaction between faculty and students. Algoma University strives to be a university of international distinction, enriching generations of diverse cultures and communities.
Through its interactive learning environment, Algoma U serves its student community of over 1,200 -- including nearly 15 percent Anishinaabe (First Nation, Inuit and Métis), 10 percent international and 70 percent regional students. In addition to the 25:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students benefit from all the opportunities of a large campus (including research, student advocacy, cooperative education, recreation centre, residence and exchange programs) while being a part of a learning community that provides every student with an opportunity to be a leader and to experience success.
Algoma University also engages actively in its local community through partnerships and participation with the Innovation Centre, Economic Development Corporation, local industries, and federal and provincial research facilities.
With its growth in recent years, the university has embraced capital expansion, including a new student residence, a new student centre, the new Information Communication and Technology Centre, as well as improved state-of-the-art wired technology infrastructure. A $16 million Biosciences and Technology Convergence Centre will be completed in 2011.

Personal support services

First-year student programs
First-year students have some special programming to address the transition to postsecondary education. The programs include a transition to university program through the learning centre -- a one-week, intensive, academic-oriented program that is free to all participants including the stay in residence; academic orientation – a half-day program held before classes begin for academic advising, registration, payment and orientation to services; welcome week – a full week program with social and academic orientations as well as the opportunity to learn more about faculty, staff and other students; Pow Wow, hosted by Indigenous Services for all students, is spiritual and celebratory; campus tours and a stay in residence prior to the start of university; transition workshops – conducted throughout the fall semester on a variety of academic topics including academic honesty, exam preparation, study skills, writing basics; individual academic advising – as required.
Housing
On-campus:
On-campus dormitory including meal plan ($6,580 per academic year); on-campus townhouse with meal plan option ($3,980 per academic year without the meal plan). All on-campus options are co-ed, single rooms. In the dormitory, students share a washroom with one student and have access to a common area with cable TV. In the townhouse, students share a living room, kitchen and two washrooms with up to four students. All on-campus residence students have access to residence assistants, laundry facilities and mailboxes. Campus classrooms and the recreation centre are less than a five-minute walk.
Off-campus: Off-campus homestay — living with a local family (primarily for international students); this is coordinated via the Sault Program for English Language Learning. Off-campus housing directory is available through the housing coordinator (housing@algomau.ca).

Student assistance
Algoma University’s financial aid office provides scholarships and bursaries to new and returning students. It also provides assistance with applications for various forms of student financial aid including the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) and its various programs, scholarships, awards, bursaries, as well as work-study programs: Canada Student Loan, Ontario Student Loan, Canada Part-time Student Loan, Ontario Special Bursary Program, Ontario Bursary for Students with Disabilities, Ontario Child Care Bursary and Ontario Work Study program.
Algoma University is also proud to offer awards of excellence to new and returning students. These are scholarships based on academic achievement and funds are provided through generous donations to the Algoma U Foundation.
The financial aid office also provides information to students regarding budgeting, money management and other types of student financial assistance.
University research
At Algoma, sharing knowledge carries with it the responsibility to advance that knowledge. Our faculty commitment to research and innovation spans the breadth of inquiry, from the microscopic (e.g., genetic diversity of baculoviruses) to the macroscopic (e.g., cultural impact of indigenous self-governance). Partnerships with world-class scientific research institutes, community-based and First Nations organizations help fortify the impact of this research on our region, our country and our world. The impact of this research, within the discipline and the communities in which we live, is both meaningful and important. Our undergraduate students, as part of their advanced studies, enjoy working under the tutelage of disciplinary experts. Affiliated with research institutes such as NORDIK Research Institute, Invasive Species Research Institute, Health Informatics Research Institute and Algoma Games for Health Research Institute. This invaluable experience earns our students the problem-solving and decision-making skills and knowledge to succeed in the workforce to advance their studies.
International education
Algoma University offers several opportunities for students, staff and faculty to get involved in international education including, but not limited to: World University Service of Canada Local Committee (Refugee Sponsorship Program); exchange/study abroad programs (eight partner options); Sault Program for English Language Learning – volunteer opportunities for Canadian and international students; Algoma Fair Trade; co-operative education and internships.
