Web Editor
Publications Division

(one-year term position)

AUCC is the national organization that represents Canadian universities and degree-granting colleges at home and abroad.  We provide a forum for discussion and a framework for action at the federal level, facilitating the development of public policy on higher education. We also encourage cooperation among universities and among partners with whom we share interests. We are a non-governmental, not-for-profit association, funded through membership fees and revenues from publications and contract management services. We are presently seeking a web editor for our publications division.

The University Affairs magazine – both print and online (www.universityaffairs.ca) – has a high degree of independence for an association magazine. It offers news, columns, opinion articles and feature stories on a wide range of topics of interest to faculty, administrators and graduate students. It also carries the country’s most comprehensive career advertising for faculty and administrative personnel at Canadian universities, with more than 200 jobs in every issue and job ads posted daily online. The magazine is published 10 times a year by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. The website is supplemented with content devoted to helping academic personnel in their career development and includes four blogs, podcasts and video.

Reporting to the Editor of University Affairs, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating and creating content, creating new services and maximizing the use of the University Affairs’ website, in particular the careers section of the site that includes content (expert articles, blogs, podcasts, video and other new services) about career development for three groups: graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, early career faculty and university administrators. The incumbent acts as editor for the site, solicits new ideas and career-related content from the university community, assigns and edits stories from freelancers and develops new initiatives to enhance and raise the profile of the site. Working closely with the UA editors,  the web editor takes an active role in any redesign initiatives that may arise from time to time and in devising measures for site testing, evaluation and feedback. The incumbent advises the editor and the division on emerging web technologies and services to keep the online  magazine current and fresh. He or she communicates and markets the University Affairs’ site and career development services to users and advertisers.
